Détails de l'observation
This bird had been seen and photographed by others prior to our visit. I have seen many heuglini and barabensis side-by-side in Bahrain in mid-March 1999, and this individual looked as I would expect a barabensis to look c. two-weeks earlier - i.e. merest traces of any winter markings, on the lower hindneck, and with breeding-state bare parts, including black and red gonydal spots. There was no adult heuglini to compare it with, but I'd judge that - taking into account the differing angles of view/sunlight - the barabensis was very slightly paler than the two 3rd-cycle heuglinis seen next to it. The degree of black in the primaries was extensive, but I cannot quantify this.
