Détails de l'observation
This shorebird was found by Adrian Hinkle , we believe, and he immediately got Chris Hinkle on it. Then Chris, who speedily and graciously drove back to alert us to this rarity and got us on the bird. We took notes in the field. Gray overall and heavily barred underneath. Plain dark gray on uppersides. Relatively short, straight bill (slightly paler at base). Noticeable white supercilium that appeared to become less noticeable behind eye. Dark line in lores. Approximately same size as nearby lesser yellowlegs, but slightly chunkier. We used our scope. This bird was on the east side of Tule Lake, off the main Auto Tour Route and about 1/4 to 1/2 mile north of the transformers opposite the Portapotty on the Auto Tour. It was about 50 meters offshore when we saw it, in a shallow area of the lake (sand bar?) frequented by an assortment of shorebirds. We ruled out Gray-tailed because not enough of a dark eye line, supercilium too short and not bright enough for Gray-tailed.
