First-winter Glaucous-winged Gull photographed by Curtis A. Marantz on 9 January 2016 at the Salton Sea State Recreation Area, Riverside County, California. This bird was initially spotted by Howard King, but it may have been a continuing bird.
Détails de l'observation
Howard initially spotted the possibly continuing, first-winter Glaucous-winged Gull sitting on the water to the northwest of the mouth of the marina, where it remained for a short time before flying off to the south. This was clearly a large, stocky gull with short, rounded wingtips and a bill that was notably stout throughout its length and maybe even a little stouter distally. The plumage was alight grayish-brown overall, but also with relatively indistinct mottling on the wings and clouding elsewhere that was not as crisp as that of a Thayer's Gull. Also apparent was that the exposed primary tips were about the same shade as the rest of the bird, if not very slightly darker and seemingly with some suggestion of paler fringes that created some weak contrast. The bill was entirely black and the eyes were dark, but I cannot recall seeing the legs or feet or a bird that I saw primarily as it sat on the water. I do suspect my photos may show more detail than I noted in the field.
