A Rufous (or Nankeen) Night-heron sunning on paperbark trunk. The Rufous or Nankeen Night-heron (Nycticorax caledonicus australasiae) is found across much of Australia and in the islands to the north. They are found in permanent or semi-permanent wetlands that may be fresh, brackish or saline. At Herdsman Lake, a large urban wetland west of Perth, Western Australia, Nankeen Night-herons mostly roost throughout the day close to the water in Flooded Gums (Eucalyptus rudis) or Freshwater Paperbarks (Melaleuca rhaphiophylla). They leave their roosts to feed in the late afternoon or early evening. This Nankeen Night-heron descended from its perch high in a Freshwater Paperbark to sun itself on the lower part of the trunk in the middle of the day. Elevation: 7 m. Date added to IBC: September 14, 2019.
