Red-necked Avocets sheltering from strong wind with Banded Stilts. Red-necked Avocets (Recurvirostra novaehollandiae) are endemic to Australia, and are highly nomadic, searching for suitable, usually saline or brackish wetlands after rainfall. Red-necked Avocets feed on small aquatic invertebrates by sweeping their bills from side-to-side. They often associate with stilts – these avocets were sheltering from a very strong wind with Banded Stilts (Cladorhynchus leucocephalus) in Hutt Lagoon, a famous pink saline lake near Port Gregory, Western Australia. Elevation: 9 m. Date added to IBC: September 12, 2019.
