Grey Go-away-birds perching in a Knobthorn. The Grey Go-away-bird (Corythaixoides concolor) is also known as the Grey Lourie, Grey Loerie, or Kwêvoëland is widespread and common in the northern parts of southern Africa. Unlike most other Turacos that are forest dwellers, the Grey Go-away-bird inhabits dry savanna woodland and feeds mainly on fruit but also eats invertebrates and nectar. The Grey Go-away-bird has a distinctive call that sounds like “go away” – hence its common name and its onomatopoeic Afrikaans name Kwêvoël. Grey Go-away-birds often perch in prominent positions and are reputed to warn other birds and mammals when predators are present with their noisy calling. Elevation: 287 m.
