A Variable Hawk perching on. A power pole. The Variable or Red-backed Hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma) is, as its name suggests, variable. This species has a bewildering array of plumage variation, and its three races occur through western South America and on the Falkland Islands. This hawk was perching on a power pole in Farellones in the high Andes above Santiago. Elevation: 2395 m. Date added to IBC: February 16, 2019.
