Southern Lapwing pair at their nest on mown grass. The elegant Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) is the only crested Lapwing species in South America, ranging from Central America to Tierra del Fuego. They are conspicuous, inhabitants of modified landscapes such as cropland, pastures and parklands, and also occur near wetlands and estuaries. They feed on insects and worms as well as small fish and aquatic invertebrates. Like other Lapwings, Southern Lapwings nest on the ground. This pair nested on mown grass in the Iguazu National Park in northern Argentina. Elevation: 218 m. Date added to IBC: February 20, 2019.
