Definitive Type 1 specs
Détails de l'observation
2 Males , 1 occasionally singing and doing flight songs over me in response to playback. 1 acting very territorial towards the other bird. This is the 4th male I've seen/heard in last 2 weeks at 3 different locations in Chenango County, but no females. I suspect females are on nests. Both birds were near the 3 roadside white pines next to this known crossbill white spruce plantation nesting site. 1 bird chased off the other bird. Attached is the recording: One bird is definitely a Type 1, but I'm going to go out on the limb that the bird the type 1 was acting territorial towards was possibly a Type 2. Can best be heard and seen between 11.6s and 14.7s. The first 2 call notes are of type 1(chewt-chewt) that have slight initial upticks with secondary components, but the next 5 are of slightly deeper possible type 2 (choowp-choowp) without upticks and no secondary components (also slightly lower frequency). For now, I will report as Type 1, but will leave second bird as "Red Crossbill" to be conservative. Hard to tell for sure. Definitely one type 1 though.
