Détails de l'observation
Besides trying to photograph the bird, I did note some interesting plumage features besides the obvious ones such as the bold white supercilium and bold white cheek that was set off by the dark eye line above and dark brown malar stripe below. These other features included 1) white upper tail coverts that were visible in flight, but not when perched (covered by wings), and this white band appeared to be somewhat “u” shaped; 2) the white and dark tail bands were uneven – the distal white and dark bands were distinctly wider than the narrower proximal bands; 3) distinct mesial stripe; and 4) some fine grayish brown horizontal barring on flanks that I noticed when viewing bird on roof through scope (see photos). This Buteo was distinctive in flight as well, with short rounded wings and longish tail that were suggestive of an Accipiter.
