Subtitle: Maoripsalta mangu. Habitat where specimen was collected: Wairau-Rainbow divide, Marlborough. Open rock-scree singer. 6,500 feet. This tape should be played with bass attenuated and treble boosted, with the volume turned low, in order to get the most natural reproduction. Mr. Dugdale phoned asking me to come to his laboratory to tape this insect he had captured at above habitat, and send a copy of the tape to Dr. Charles A. Fleming who (with Dugdale) is revising the taxonomy of NZ cicadas. The insect was placed in a screened cardboard box under a desk lamp whose heat warmed it and caused it to "sing". They now prefer this technique to field recording, believing that the difference in sound between natural and controlled conditions is insignificant in cicadas. Mr. Dugdale said that this was the only specimen recorded from this height. It was very much darker than the normal mangu. Maoripsalta mangu. Equipment Notes: 1.5 kc hi-pass filter.
