Distant recordings across valley in response to playback.
Détails de l'observation
Responded to our playback of both hoots and yelps from a great distance away to the northeast. Calls in response to both, however, were only high-pitched yelps (rising "whemp" calls), higher-pitched than George Wagner's nice recording (https://www.xeno-canto.org/438081), perhaps indicating that our bird was a female (?). Much to our amazement, the bird eventually flew in with a high flight over the valley, wing-clapping 2-3x before it alighted in a thinned tract of adjacent pine forest, at which point we could clearly see its silhouette. Interestingly, the ear tufts appeared to be rather short and blunt, so they were either not fully erect or perhaps the bird was a youngster. In the beam of GFS's light we could make out orange eye glow, white running along the bottom of the facial discs, and a white 'unbuttoned vest' surrounded by dark streaks on an otherwise very dark owl. An epic start to the day!
