Détails de l'observation
Seen well (!!!!!), recordings taken. First heard around 11:20am and was present for maybe an hour. Responds fairly well to imitations of its call (easier to do accurately if you are male 😛) shy, but not overly shy: was relatively close to the trail. First time we heard it, we had been chatting loudly on the trail. Chainsaw sounds also didn't seem to bother it (must be used to it, here). Voice: deep, odd "hmmmm" sound, like a deep male voice expressing skepticism. Appearance: large rail with awkward shape, sort of like a tinamou, rounded back, nonexistent tail, large feet, long curved neck, small head. Stout bill with red base suggesting at least one was female. Reddish wings. Tawny nape. Grayish chest. The next day we spent 3 hours in the area where we had them and had no sign of them.
