Détails de l'observation
Report of a distressed bird by Summit Dorm where construction occurring on campus. Discovered a chimney swift on the ground. Three swifts detected flying between Summit and Sterling Dorm. Took the CHSW home to rest before trying to release again or take to rehab the next day. Returned CHSW to area about 2 hours later. Noticed five chimney swifts about Calhoun School house flying over building and then going into a chimney on my way to attempt release. Noticed two of the three swifts still foraging by dorms going into chimney of Summit Dorm.. Tried to release swift I had held for a few hours. Successful release of previously distressed swift. A lot of construction by dorms with tall trucks so perhaps flew into something. Nine different swifts (including distressed bird) detected in total. Swifts still on campus in July and it is important to note that each summer nestlings where heard in at least one of the chimneys (Sterling Dorm) when I used to live until last summer. Unfortunately, despite my encouragement not to cap the chimney in Sterling, the new faculty insisted as afraid of birds and chimney was capped last fall. My students and I will be building a Chimney Roost to place on campus this coming academic year to make-up for lost nesting space.
