Bald Eagle
Behaketaren xehetasunak
This was Bald Eagle Day. One of the first birds I had at the river was the eagle shown in photo #1. It flew past me, landing in the clump of mistletoe-laden trees a little upriver. Much later, I reached my eastern trail turn-around, a wide gravel 'beach' 0.6 mi upstream from the dirt ramp fishing spot/trail beginning. This turn-around point is a good spot to check the riverbed before it curves more strongly to the right. Just a little shy of this curve, there is a horse carcass at the edge of the water. An adult Bald Eagle, two coyotes, and two Common Ravens were all very interested in the remains. The eagle was not particularly intimidated by coyote #1 (see photos). Eventually, that coyote crossed the river and disappeared into the brush. A larger, more menacing coyote then appeared from my side of the river. Ears back and ruff raised, it approached the carcass. I was watching with binoculars and scope. The eagle gave ground. It lifted and flew a short distance before settling down to wait for this bigger coyote to finish. When it left, the eagle once again returned to the horse. At this point, I headed back the way I came and worked my way down to the bluff. Along the way, I noted two adult Bald Eagles were on the knob just below the top of the downriver end of the bluff. All the eagles seen today were adults and thus I assume I had a total of two.
