NOTES: (Time: 1300+. Gen. Habitat: See Diamond CU Press 1987, Studies of Mascarene Island Birds.) Playback of a sequence recorded earlier in the week brought in two of them calling as they came close always together--and they called together. Theyk remained foraging in the area--I noted one break up a small green caterpillar and eat it. They foraged for insects continually! I noted much bill-wiping (response to playback?). They came in very close to the sound source a machine on the ground. The bill wipes and wing flicking were the most obvious response to playback together with the close approach. (Bill wipes and bill snaps heard). Note there is a harsh scold note heard in with the sequences of "pit-pit" calls. This is playback response. They would come back in response and call one/twice then fly off. See Edit book MAU II pp. 12-15. Field notebook pp. 51-52. Response to playback: Approach. Response to playback: Normal song.
