These were a surprise. Red Road, about a tenth of a mile short of the intersection with the Black Point Trail. They arrived as a flock (40 is a low estimate), then spread out among the sparse pines. Not a great recording, but you can hear some "gyp" calls. I had a brief but clear view of the flock arriving -- all appeared to be of the same species, roughly the same shape, size, and color pattern, which was pretty uniform, all darkish, none with observable streaking, wing bars, etc. They were backlit so I couldn't get color, but clearly finches, larger and "huskier" than house finches, and with longer and pointier wings. The flight calls, with which I am familiar, clinched the ID. My estimate of number was based on seeing the whole flock together, too briefly to count, but clearly a lot more than 20 and no more than 60 or 70, so I figured 40 was a safe & conservative number to report. Thanks to Ethan Monk for the information (from the recording) that they were type 3.
