I was very surprised to hear this bird calling from the small cluster of oaks just above the junction of Vernal Pool trail and Ranch Rd. After making some recordings, the bird flew across the trail right in front of me to some oaks on the other side of the trail, where I was able to study the bird as it perched in an oak tree. Due to the inclement weather I did not have a camera with me, but some audio recordings of its call is attached. Call is a loud, sharp "pik". When the bird flew it had a large white patch running down the length of the back. When I saw it perched in the oak tree I could clearly see the black and white face pattern with a large black patch over the eye and cheek, white supercilium, white malar stripe bordered by black, black cap. There was a red patch on the nape. The beak was as long as the head. The wings and tail were black. The chest was white. This species is of regular occurrence higher up in the Santa Ana Mountains from Blue Jay and Falcon campgrounds to points north, however I have seen this species near the El Cariso Fire Station along the Ortega Highway. I believe this is my first sighting of this species on the SRP. This or another bird was calling from the oak woodland near the windmill along the Lomas Trail north of the Adobes, but I assume it was likely the same bird.
