Behaketaren xehetasunak
Sapsucker seen at the top of a distant tree, too far and light too poor to confirm the identification, but it was obvious this was not a Red-breasted Sapsucker. In the field no red could be seen on the nape or face and the two white stripes on the face stood out boldly. Most of the time the bird had its back to us, but at one point it turned and flashed a red throat. Unfortunately it flew and we were unable to re-find it. The photos I got are heavily cropped but one shows the red throat and a bit of red on the forehead. There might be a black border to the red throat, or it may just look that way because of the poor light. It is very difficult to tell if there is any red on the nape - there is a bit of a smudge in the center of the white stripe that crosses the upper nape, but It's hard to tell if it might be red. The white striping on the back is in two quite clear rows, but is also fairly extensive. For now I am reporting this as a Red-naped Sapsucker (geographically more likely), but would appreciate any feedback.
