Behaketaren xehetasunak
Seen in flock of Laughing Gulls, being fed on the beach at a distance of approximately 40 feet. Noticeably larger gulls- approximately 20 % larger, taller, much more “chesty” in appearance, with light colored legs, longer and heavier wings, overall brown “tint” with light streaking on chest and neck. In flight, when spooked, not buoyant as the LAGUs, with clearly brown tones to underside of the wings. Aggressive at times to the LAGUs. Dark bills, but details though to see (backlit) and I was unable to approach too closely. (I am familiar with this species when home in NY (ocean shore) but was initially unsure in this location.) I rules out Herring Gulls as well as Great Black-backed Gulls- the size difference was not dramatic enough compared to LAGU. Bill was substantial- ruling out any tern species. The light-colored legs were most noticeable to me-although that may have been the result of the back-lighting. Cell phone photo taken on following day, same location (and possibly the same bird???) shows smudge behind eye. The flock did not return, but the photo of the one returning bird is attached.
