background noise from wind and water against boat hull
Behaketaren xehetasunak
Highest count seen at once flying around island. No juveniles observed but birds were also landing on the ground out of sight behind retaining walls, so it’s possible there are nests and/or chicks. Several birds observed carrying food in their bills and landing, but I wasn't able to see what happened with the food in any of the instances. Unsure if this represents food brought for offspring or a courtship behavior. According to BotW in BRTE food is mostly regurgitated not carried in bill, but fish can be seen in birds' bills in some attached photos. Some birds also seen foraging close by and flying back to island. High courtship flight observed, where initially 5 birds flew upwards together, calling, then broke into 2 pairs which continued upwards with the 5th flying back down. From BotW: "A resurgence of courtship behavior occurs late in breeding season after hatching, a period that coincides also with return of nonbreeders to the colony." So it seems like some (many?) of these birds could be nonbreeders? Adult interaction of calling and head bobbing while facing each other on the ground may have been territorial? For the duration of observation there was quite a lot of activity with many birds calling, taking flight together, circling around or flying out to forage and then returning; lots of vocalizing. Many birds molting inner primaries (can be seen in photos). Island may be presently human-occupied so unsure what effect that may have on breeding activities.
