Subadult Brown Booby photographed in flight by Curtis A. Marantz on 6 August 2023 over the Catalina Channel between Lausen Sea Mount and Dana Point, and 19.9 kilometers just south of due west from Dana Point at 33º 24’ 41.74” N, 117º 55’ 20.36” W, Orange County, California.
Behaketaren xehetasunak
While cruising back east from the Lausen Sea Mount toward Dana Point, we saw a immature Brown Booby flying in from the north when we were 19.9 kilometers just south of due west from Dana Point at 33º 24’ 42.00” N, 117º 55’ 19.14” W. I cannot recall who first spotted this bird when it flew in from the north and made a single pass at moderate distance before continuing on its way, providing us with reasonable, but not exceptional, views and photographic opportunities. This was a relatively large seabird that was a bit larger than a Western Gull, but more conspicuously different was the overall structure. Even from a distance, I noted a relatively long, conical bill that tapered from a base of medium depth to a pointed tip along a culmen that appeared to be relatively straight. The crown was rounded, the head was relatively large, and the neck was longer than that of a gull yet also relatively stout. The body appeared to be rather plump, and the wings were long, slim, and tapering to pointed tips. I thought the wingbeats were slow and relatively deep, but I cannot recall if this bird was seen gliding. I am also now having a hard time remembering anything about the tail. The plumage was primarily dark brown and showing minimal contrast amid the head, neck, breast, upperparts, and upperwings. Although the underparts also appeared dark at first, better views revealed that the belly was clouded with dark brown and dull whitish, and also that there was a relatively sharp demarcation between the uniformly brown breast and sides versus the clouded belly and flanks. I cannot however recall seeing the pattern on the underwings or that on the tail. This bird was a bit far for me to see the soft-part colors clearly. I thought the bill, and maybe also the face, were a dark gray in color, but I was unable to discern the colors of the eyes, legs, or feet.
