NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 5. Bulk reel: Weather: Mountain clear. One-figure succession song. Quality: 2-; Level: +3. At dawn I heard an owl giving "one-figure succession" song. At ~ 7:35 I tried playing the similar song of G. brasilianum and didn't get any reaction, although it may have "started" this owl, for when I then played this species' song (one-figure succession, not alternate song), this bird immediately started to respond with one-figure succession. Upon further playback (3x) of one-figure succession of this species, the bird continued to respond similarly, apparently from same place across the ravine. I then tried playing the alternate song of this species and bird continued with one-figure succession song in apparently the same place. Bird didn't come close. Note - Next day at dawn I heard the "alternate song" of this species; perhaps the same bird. b) 7 Mar 1971. 3:00 PM. Weather: Mountain cloudy. One-figure succession song. Quality: 2. Level: +3. One alternate song with one-figure succession song terminatioin. Quality: 2. Level: +3. More one-figure succession. Quality: 1-2. Level: +5. c) 8 Mar 1971. 6:40 AM. One alternate song with one-figure succession termination given naturally and recorded incidentally. (This "phrase" seems to constitute the normal alternate song. The phrase was given only once each time.) Several others similar were heard but recorded too poorly to save. (I was working on Penelope montagnii and so couldn't concentrate on the owl.) (On two occasions the bird also gave short phrases of just one-figure succession song.) Quality: 3. Level: +5.
