Lots in forest that surely came from nearby roost site. At about 6:45am it was getting quite bright and I noticed a dozen small birds flycatching from the dead Brachystegia trees (most of these trees in this part of the reserve are dead). They were mostly Clarke's with a few other birds mixed in such as helmetshrikes. They stayed by the edge of the clearing for 15 minutes, sallying from the tree tops continuously for insects. Then as it got progressively lighter they banded with helmetshrikes and moved further into the (dead) forest. The dead trees didn't seem to bother them. Sometimes they poked around at the branches a bit, and the female-type birds seemed to move into some dense tall lush bushes from time to time. The males (maybe five of them) remained very high up. All of them moved quickly loosely with the helmetshrikes after they initially stayed by the clearing for a while. After about 40min of following them through the forest they had only gone about 0.5km. A few were giving house Sparrow like chirping calls. Eventually the sun came out and I tracked one of the chirping birds to a treetop. It was a juv based on the pale gape line. It sat from one tall perch for about 3-4min before flying off - see photos and recording. About 3 others were within earshot doing the same thing. One of these eventually flew to the sedgy marsh.
