Behaketaren xehetasunak
Found this morning by Jonathan Reimer-Berg. Viewed by 10 of us while I was there -- and then captured by a Peregrine just 5-10 minutes after I left! In view at moderate distance to west of transect trail the entire time, spending two bouts sitting on the mud and two extended bouts flying. During the flying bouts it tacked into the strong headwinds and made repeated swoops down toward the water surface, especially in one particular area. We never definitively saw it catch a fish, so I'm guessing it may have been picking off insects flying just above the surface (although this couldn't be confirmed either). The videos show some of this swooping behavior, which took place innumerable times. The bird was in crisp clean plumage and looked perfectly healthy and active. What a shock to learn about its demise so shortly after watching it perform for over an hour! Most past records of this species in Oregon have not stuck around long, so as a result this was a state bird for me and several other folks here today with state lists well over 400.
