Well the photo was indeed useful. Earlier this afternoon after writing up the bird in my van, the bird was gone from the flats. When I returned at 5 p.m., it was back and that is when I took this photo. It then joined a flock of Dunlin in flight and landed further back and out of sight. Probably a male by the relatively short bill for the species.
Behaketaren xehetasunak
I have never claimed a spring Western in this part of the world and maybe I should not start now but here goes. A peep with black legs on the flats off the bathroom. Dense streaks on chest and then prominent spots/ streaks flarring off to the sides reminiscent of a White-rumped but the shape of the bird is wrong for White-rumped. Both Semipalmated and White-rumped Sandpipers are normally late Spring migrants. At close range there is rufous on the crown and a light rufous cheek patch. The bill is not exceptionally long but that is not a disqualifying feature. Tonight I will see if my photos are useful.
