*5th state record. Photographed on Sunday by Lisa Cushing and yesterday by Michael Rosano. It was assumed to be an Eastern but Aidan Kiley saw photos on Facebook and suggested it should be checked for Western. Seen this morning by Paul Desjardins and documented well by Chuck and many others, confirming it was indeed a Western. Stayed in the area of the nature center parking lot and bird blind marsh. Very secretive at times though, taking cover in the brush along the edge of the saltmarsh multiple times. Overall very pale, lacking buffy back feathers and flanks. Thin streaks/spots on pale flanks. Barring on tail and flight feathers thin and disconnected with no central dark stripe on sides of the feather shafts. Yellow from throat bleeding into malar. Limited white in tail (two outer rectrices R5-6 mostly white, third most outer R4 about half white). Heard calling when perched. Constantly flicked and spread tail while foraging for grubs in nature center lot in the vicinity of Killdeer. Lifer! Certainly an overlooked species in the east. There are a couple records from Horsebarn Hill and Stearn's Farm in the 1960's and 70's which haven't been reviewed by ARCC. These individuals were singing and seen multiple years but I believe the recordings are now lost.
