Discovered 30 January by Tom Aversa and identification corrected by Doug Hitchcox on 31 January. This bird seemed healthy and happy foraging along the low tide shoreline of Curtis Cove. The bird never called, but the blackish orbital ring, brown feathering across the lores broad and meeting at the bill gape, as well as visual confrimation that no apparent webbing was present between inner toe and middle toe confirmed identification as this species. The white brow over and behind the eye was probably broader than might be expected on Semipalmated Plover as well. I felt that the bill was less deep at the base than Semipalmated Plover too. This gave the bird a thinner looking bill (not necessarily longer but appearing so) than Semipalmated Plover. Don Mairs and I were together when I found the first state record at Lubec in 2003, and Don was with me today to see this bird in perfect conditions and beautiful light. Postscript: the bird died the morning of Sunday 5 February; this following the brutal cold snap with subzero temps that began Friday and continued through Saturday.
