Seen in western willow thicket from near ground level up to about three meters up in the willows. Quite active, never staying long in one place, but seemingly not overly wary if I remained quiet. It flicked its wings or tail, but I cannot now recall which one. We heard early on several of the clear, whistled calls that I described as an upslured "sweeet," but the call in heard more often was a distinctive "djit, djit" that to me sounded much like a squirrel knawing on a pine cone. This was a small passerine that appeared relatively similar in shape to a Hermit Thrush, yet probably closer in size to a junco. The bill was short and slim, but I was unable either to compare its length relative to field-marks on the face or determIne its precise shape. The forehead was sloping, probably about as steeply as that of a thrush, and the crown was rounded, both on a head that seemed large for the bird's size. The neck was short and stout, and the body was plump, full-chested, and with a posture that was roughly diagonal with the tail held downward in the plane of the body. I failed to determine either the primary projection or the placement of the wingtips relative to the base of the tail, yet I thought the wings were relatively long. The tail was of medium length, in that I thought it was about as long as the body without the head and neck, and it appeared to be parallel-sided and seemingly with a relatively square tip. The legs appeared to be relatively long, but I cannot now recall much more about them. Much like my impressions of this bird's structure, I was able to see the general patterns of the plumage, but not so many of the finer details. Overall, I thought the head, upperparts, and wings were a warm, medium to slightly darker brown, if not olive-brown. I noted a pale eyering that was narrow, yet well-defined, but not necessarily complete or of equal width throughout. My impression was that the eyering was either whitish or pale buff, rather than being more colorful. I think the wings, or at least the remiges, appeared slightly more rufescent than the upperparts, and they seemed to have a weakly striped pattern, with darker and browner inner-webs contrasting somewhat with the more colorful outer-webs. I cannot now recall the degree to which the exposed primary tips differed in pattern from the remaining remiges. I did not think the coverts showed as much contrast from the upperparts as did the remiges, but I also cannot now recall their pattern precisely. The tail was certainly blue, yet I thought there was some contrast between what appeared to be bright, sky-blue edges and duller and seemingly more grayish-blue, if not dusky-blue inner-webs. I noted a relatively strong contrast between a whitish, or creamy-whitish, throat versus the dark brown face, but I was not sure if the malar region was darker than the rest of the face. Demarcating the lower edge of the whitish throat, was the rather dusky, brownish color of the breast and sides, but the flanks contrasted sharply as a relatively bright orange color. I thought the belly was pale, and likely creamy-whitish, but I did not see this as well, and I have no recollection whatsoever of the colors on the undertail coverts or the underside of the tail. Both the bill and eyes were dark, and I have a weak recollection that the legs and feet were at least relatively dark; however, the precise colors of the soft parts eluded me.
