/hu On the trail up the bluff, I heard a commotion of small birds, and saw a blue jay land on a branch with something in its beak. Turned out to be a fledgling titmouse. The jay tore a piece of it off and flew away, leaving the corpse sprawled across the branch. A few minutes later, another racket began, much more vigorous. Again a blue jay being mobbed by small birds, again with a titmouse in his mouth. This one was still alive and flapping. The jay landed on a branch, and hammered it with its bill until it was still. The jay hopped around a bit, then flew off with the titmouse. I had my camera; haven't developed the film yet. Later that spring I saw a jay take a titmouse at our feeder (one of a family, so presumably a fledgling as well).
