Poor Photos in heavy rain; iso and shutter speed too low! Too much black and white on face for Red-breasted, too much red/brown for Red-naped. Vocalizations sounded like the Red-naped “Kweer” call in the Sibley app.1/4/24: changing to RNSS based on input from several sources including: I don't see anything on this bird that suggests it is a hybrid. Generally, I would advocate for erring on the side of caution but there is no reason to suspect this bird is a hybrid. As Steve Shunk commented, westside reports of RNSA all too often turn out to be hybrids, not because it is so difficult to eliminate that possibility, but because folks just don't know what to look for when trying to eliminate the possibility of a hybrid. In my experience, RNSA X RBSA hybrids always show some red on the sides of the head and that red is typically bleeding through the white striping on the face, which absolutely guarantees it is a hybrid. I see no red anywhere on the head of this bird other than where it should be on a 'pure' RNSA, thus I would be entirely comfortable calling it one. Dave Irons
