Continuing rarity first reported by Alan Belford on 11\6 from this very location. Relocated yesterday and apparently earlier this morning grazing in nearby fields. The pond held only a couple hundred CANG when I arrived but more geese trickled in so I decided to stick around and this bird flew in around 10:45. Reminiscent of Brant in size and structure with the black stocking appearance but bold white face, pale almost white flanks, and silvery back. Only the second sighting for Franklin County amended 11/9/21 with this additional information provided by Alan B... Barnacle Goose When found, this rarity is usually noted during migration in the surrounding valleys and lowlands, although NYSARC has accepted (origin uncertain for both sightings) May 8, 1997, Lake Flower in Saranac Lake, and July 31, 2011, Alexandria Bay, Jefferson County, both of which fall outside the expected time of year. More recent sightings fall on more quintessential dates for Barnacle Goose including 2 individuals on March 18, 2017 at Moffit Road near Plattsburgh, Clinton County and December 1 & 7, 2013 in Westport at the outlet for Hoisington Brook in Westport, Essex County.
