This hummingbird on Oct 21 in Pubnico, photographed and only seen by Arthur d'Entremont, has been confirmed as being a CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD by Sheri Williamson, author of 'A Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America' in the Peterson Field Guide Series. Her comments: "Ruby-throateds often appear quite portly in fall, but this bird's short tail, proportionally large head, and pale face ID it as a Calliope." The buffy colouration seen in some photos is likely an image artifact. The conditions were not the best for photography and the photos were taken through a house window. Other supporting features are the apparent dark central tail feathers (R1) and the pale loral spot at the base of the bill. This is a female-type plumaged bird, but age/sex can't be determined via these photos. The only other confirmed Calliope Hummingbird in Nova Scotia was a Sep 2010 bird near Lunenburg. A photo of that bird can be found at plate 66 of 'All the Birds of Nova Scotia' by Ian McLaren.
