The first large groups of Rusty Blackbirds are arriving and departing the marsh on south and southwest winds. The flock of approx 75 blackbirds, first reported by Jim Dillon on Sunday https://ebird.org/checklist/S83440376 may be the flock remaining in the marsh that we observed tonight. Early migrating flocks tend to forage outside in the marsh and fly in during the hour before sunset from the north and north west. These RUBL often stage on trees near Ford Ave and along the rail bed and the edge of the golf course. The group of RUBL singing from the tallest tree behind Ford Ave grew to over 40 before flying (minutes before sunset) to join another group of over 30 in the shrubs on the far side of Beaverdam Brook, less than a quarter of the distance to rail bed island. Some of the RUBL in the short trees and shrubs lining the former path to rail bed island may have come up from foraging in the marsh along the rail bed. Melissa observed RUBL on cattails through her scope and we saw a few flying low in the marsh along the rail bed. I could also hear soft chucking coming from the marsh beside the rail bed. As we were arriving a few were already singing on trees on the rail bed behind the houses on Ford Ave and these birds flew to trees on the golf course. At 6:50 pm (3 min before sunset) the group of just over 40 RUBL at the top of the tallest tree behind Ford Ave took flight. Most circled around us to join the group in the shrubs on the far side of Beaverdam Brook and a small group flew over to continue staging on the golf course trees. Just before sunset the golf course RUBL flew over to join the group of RUBL staging in the shrubs and low trees on the far side of Beaverdam Brook and continued singing and chucking softly with gurgles and the occasional kerglee until about 7 pm. Over the course of about a minute at 7 pm, all the RUBL dropped directly down into the marsh from their trees and shrubs on the far side of Beaverdam Brook and went silent (see audio).
