Behaketaren xehetasunak
This species was a surprise, though before finding them we commented that the habitat looked good. Both were flushed up from thick wiregrass/Andropogon in pine savanna. One perched in an oak tree, where we had great views of it, while the other was much more furtive, not flushing until we were almost stepping on it. Both birds eventually gave us good looks. Both were pretty similar: smallish, large-headed light tan sparrows with large pink bills, flat crowns, and greenish cast to the face; short tails that looked somewhat pointed in flight; light tan across the chest with very fine black streaks, otherwise plain below; the backs were scalloped; the wing coverts were chestnut-y, but otherwise the wings were not especially remarkable (eg no wingbars); the face pattern was somewhat complex, with a tan malar bordered above and below with very fine black edges, fine black edging to the auriculars (so that a black line connected around the auriculars), almost but not quite meeting a thin black line extending back from the eye.
