Behaketaren xehetasunak
This bird called several times, but did not come out into the open. It was photographed in detail a few days later by Sue Tavaglione (see below). During this occasion, and on another, both this bird and a Clapper Rail could be heard. The Clapper Rail called from the saltwater/marsh behind where this bird was. In mid-November Pete Plage had the bird come out into view in response to him playing a call-back. Though there was some discussion as to whether this bird was/is a hybrid - all indicators are that it is a King Rail. It is a very reddish bird with barred flanks, more reddish wings than a Clapper would show, and a slate colored head with grayish-red cheeks.unlike the Clappers that have been photographed at the adjoining marsh. * It's been some time, but King Rails did occur here (the Carillon) regularly in the 1970s- thru 1990s. The timing of this bird - first showing up in October, may indicate it is a wintering/transit bird rather than a breeding resident. It did not remain in the area much longer after this sighting. The habitat was minimal.
