This was a female, as evinced by in the first photo by the white throat, rather than the red throat found on males. The first photo also clearly shows the yellow belly. The absence of red on the nape rules out the somewhat similar Red-naped Sapsucker, which, anyhow, is a western species. The second photo is supplied to provide a better view of the broad white wing stripe of this species.
