Behaketaren xehetasunak
Medium sized sterna. Gray upper parts. Dark Red Bill. Black cap. Very long forked tail. Underwing has much thinner area of black on the edge of the primaries than a common tern. We all knew it looked different from the common terns we had been seeing. As soon as I was able to look at the pictures on a computer and study them it was definitely different as we had surmised in the field. Eary, Tammy & I each ran multiple photos through Merlin and every time Arctic it can back as an Arctic Tern on over 10 pictures from 3 different photographers. So I decided to send pics to Jeff Bouton. He agreed with what we were thinking. He recommended we forward on to Alvaro Jaramillo who is one of the leading pelagic experts in the US. Alvaro responded:”I think it may in fact be a worn adult Arctic Tern. It does not show primaries of differing ages, but all one age, albeit worn. The long tail is also good. Underwing looks fine too. I would go Arctic over Common”.
