Behaketaren xehetasunak
***Very rarely detected spring migrant in western NY and apparently the first eBird record for Niagara County. Heard singing spontaneously from dike between Tonawanda Ruddy Marsh West / Paddy 2 about 250m south of dike that runs between Paddy 1 and Paddy 2. Singing from Paddy 2 side. Song distinctive and unmistakable, like dipping a hot pan into water. Sang very intermittently, usually once or twice followed by periods of apparent silence. Strong winds and a large number of other vocal species made it difficult to detect, and I was lucky to even hear it. Only seen briefly in flight where size and shape suggested Swamp Sparrow with streaked back and bright ochre on head and breast. Didn’t see well. Presumably a migrant given timing is near peak of migration for this species (though my first in spring for NYS). I had thought I had gotten recordings of a couple songs, but with the windy conditions, only picked up a single song.
