A male Wedge-tailed Eagle standing by a road-killed Red Kangaroo. The Wedge-tailed Eagle (Aquila audax) is Australia’s largest raptor, with a wingspan of up to 2.8 metres (9 feet). In addition to their large size, Wedge-tailed Eagles have prominently ‘fingered’ outer primaries and a conspicuous wedge-shaped tail. Wedge-tailed Eagles mainly hunt small- to medium vertebrates, and are also partial to carrion. This blackish adult male was feeding on the road-killed remains of a large male Red Kangaroo (Megaleia rufa) on the edge of the Carnarvon-Mullewa Road in the Urawa Nature Reserve in the semi-arid Murchison region of Western Australia. Elevation: 299 m. Date added to IBC: July 1, 2019.
