Kelp Goose female eating kelp, Ushuaia. The Kelp Goose, Chloephaga hybrida, is a fully marine goose found only in southern South America, mainly in Patagonian Chile, Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands. These beautiful geese show strong sexual dimorphism – the females are chocolate brown with pale scalloping on their breast feathers, while the males are white with a black bill and yellow feet. They are often seen loafing or feeding on kelp or other seaweeds on the rocks of the Ushuaia waterfront. Kelp Geese are restricted to rocky coasts and mainly eat kelp and other seaweeds gathered off the rocks. They nest in tall grass or shrubs behind the beach and lay 4-7 eggs in late October or Early November. Elevation: 4 m. Date added to IBC: January 10, 2018.
