Behaketaren xehetasunak
First accepted documentation of this species for the state after several previously reported possible birds through the years.. Not as dark mantled as nearby GBBG. Similar, maybe a bit darker than LBBG. Similar size to HERG but a bit bulkier/chunkier and pot-bellied. Huge white tertial crescent connected to thin white skirt. Massive white trailing edge visible in one raised wing photo.Very large white apical spots on black primaries.Yellow iris with obvious black streak to and around eye. Fairly light brown smudging on nape, neck, and top of head. Legs brighter pink than all the nearby HERG. Yellow bill especially on tip with black spot on gonys and just a hint of red around the black. Bill longish. Did not see bird fly or see spread wing except straight on so no string of pearls, etc seen. Bird flew and disappeared while I was away briefly for a new camera battery. Remarkably, before this sighting was reported, Matt Kappler discovered this bird roosting that evening just before dark on Summit Lake in Summit County. Many saw the bird there the next day before sunrise. The bird was seen through the morning of 1/19 when a large storm approached and the bird was seen departing the landfill of the original location, lifting high and flying out of sight.
