I think it was Charity who first spotted along the south shore of the lake what appeared to be the same bird that she, Julie, and Alan had found the previous day in the same general area. Although this bird began along the south shore, it eventually flew over to the southeastern shore near the T-shaped peninsula, where I was able to get some photos. This was a relatively large, plump shorebird with a stout bill that was short for a sandpiper yet rather large for a plover. It also had a proportionately large head, a short neck, and a plump body that tapered distally as a result of the long wings. The legs also appeared stout yet not overly long for a shorebird. This bird was in faded, alternate plumage, so the crown, back of the neck, and the upperparts and wings were light gray with dark mottling almost throughout. Contrasting with the generally paler upperparts was blackish clouding on the throat, and with some of this clouding extending up onto the sides of the head and down across the breast. The belly was even more extensively blackish, but the sides and flanks were paler. Also apparent when this bird flew were that the rump, tail, and much of the underwings appeared to be pale, yet the axillars contrasted as solidly black. The bill was black, and the eyes and legs were dark, but I failed to note their precise coloration.
