NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 19. Bulk reel: 370. Weather: almost clear. Guan activity started at about 5:30AM. at beginning are calls, one hoarse and mostly typical, (the very first calls, hoarse and liquid, seem almost surely of "granti", but see [below **]) another more "liquid"; not clear if coming from same bird, but seems so at times. Then there is a wing-whirr which it appears may not be given by the bird with hoarse voice, and appears latter may have followed after the bird that displayed. Length: 4'26". Quality: 2. Level: +14. Parabola: yes. (For some recording made just after this see Cut 12 of P jacquacu (granti)[LNS 67637].) [**]The first calls, also hear later, hoarse and liquid, seem almost surely to be of "granti". The next calls, hoarse but at higher pitch seem almost surely to be of marail. But both *seem* to be coming from same bird (listen at about 50sec, 1:20, 2:40) or else both birds (or 3 birds the hoarse and liquid may be 2 individuals) are in focus. Which bird gave the display? The "high hoarse?" Obviously not the "low hoarse", yet it seemed to follow after the bird that displayed. Very Curious!! Note: again on 5/IV there was no acitivity by marail in this spot. Two displays were heard in distance, perhaps by the same bird, the first at 5:30AM and not identified as to species. A little later (about 5:35) a bird that was almost certainly "granti" (=jacquacu) called and crowed almost overhead, see Cut 17 that species [LNS 76742]. According to the MAC-FAO people, they had collected (ie-hunted) no guans since March (altho they had shot 20 Crax alector!!) so that doesn't seem the explanation for the lack of marail activity in this spot. Then a general note made 9/IV/68 indicates that there was in general less vocal activity than during 1st week in March.
