digitized from slide. I had identified this in the field as Black-billed Shrike-Tyrant, based on the (rather little) literature we had in 1987, but Daniel Lane, eBird reviewer in Peru, suggested otherwise: "Given the sooty color of the underparts, the hefty bill, and the apparent lack of white in the tail. I'd actually call this Gray-bellied Shrike-Tyrant, which is a rare austral migrant to Peru!" This is a bit north of the usual range given in all the literature I reviewed (e.g., the new Peru guide, Ridgely & Tudor, HBW) but in redigitizing and enlarging the photos I found numerous points of comparison, all of which appear to favor an out-of-range austral migrant over Black-billed Shrike-Tyrant.
