Many thanks to Lorriene & Craig for their initial report, plus to Rob & Nick for the follow-up visit, then texting regarding this gorgeous bird!!! We were busy with my Mom this afternoon, so I didn't hear about the sighting until towards suppertime. With rain in the forecast tonight and tomorrow, I thought I'd give it the old 'college try'. ;) It took me a while to find the little gem, but eventually the CITE swam out from some cattails on the north side of the east portion of the wetland. Field marks noted: Unmistakable!!! Male with deep reddish-brownish colour on head, neck and underparts, with black undertail coverts; bright red eye; longish, black, somewhat spatulate bill; tawny brown back, with sepia markings and longish scapulars. When bird flew from east side of the wetland, over the road towards the west side, I noted the powdery-blue secondary coverts, bordered with white and iridescent green speculum – very similar in pattern when compared i BWTE. The weather conditions were against me, but I did manage to obtain a few VERY poor digi-scoped "record shots". NEW for 2024!!!
