As I hopped out of the car to close the gate, I stopped dead in my tracks!! What on earth was that call from the nearby thicket?? I could only describe it as like a Scarlet Robin call but with the exact richness and mellow depth of a Blackbird, an instantly striking sound... I naturally went and peered into the branches... and... to my absolute and utter astonishment, a slaty black and shockingly brilliant pink little bundle of plumpness hopped up!!! There, for the very first time in over twenty years of living on the property, was a male PINK R0BIN in absolutely fantastic form and fettle!!!! After it flitted ominously towards the neighbours garden, I rushed to grab my camera before I could lose it for good... and, at first, I barely managed to bag a very vague but still ID-able record shot. However, that was far from the end of things; I decided to try pishing the bird in, and this went EXTREMELY WELL; bristling with indignence, loudly uttering that iconic Pink Robin "snapping twig" call, it came bombing back in to peer at me from virtually within touching distance, cocking its head this way and that, drooping and flicking its wings, putting on the perfect show even if it was a pretty mobile target to pin down properly... still, with a bit of lying on the ground and weaving around the thicket-clumps, I bagged a few portraits I was more than happy with, and couldn't believe my luck at getting to have such a wonderful look at by far my favourite of all the Robin species!!! However, things were about to get even more extraordinary; with a sharp hissing cry, the Robin threw itself down towards the ground, where AN0THER PINK R0BIN (this one with a handsome white blaze just above the bill) was quietly feeding, leading to a savage tussle!!! Despite having the single tiny tongue of rainforest down in the gully, I NEVER really expected to see this most special of birds around these parts!!!
