Detalles de la observación
Dave spotted it and got a photo. Shawneen recorded it. Will add. First spotted about 60-70 yards away and given that it was an all green-yellow warbler presumed it would be an Orange-crowned. Once I got a decent view and saw the face pattern and coloration I realized it was a female-type Yellow Warbler. Face very plain with a large-looking eye completely surrounded by a pale whitish eyering, not eye arcs. Eye looked large on the face and there was no suggestion of a supercilium, or any duskier or darker line through the eye. Yellow on the under parts brighter yellow than even the brightest Orange-crowned. Upper parts were dingier. Wings showed the slight suggestion of diffuse wing bars, something Orange-crowned does not show and the tertial edges were pale. Also noted and shown in the photos were the exceptionally long undertail coverts, which generally result in Yellow Warblers looking a bit plumper and shorter-tailed than Orange-crowned. The bill was also fairly heavy and long. Loud smacking chip note heard repeatedly and recorded by Shawneen (attached). We did not know at the time, but apparently an individual of this species wintered at this location in 2022-23, thus we presume it is the same individual and is an after hatch-year female. It showed no streaking on the underparts.
