The Red-shouldered Hawk extends its wings as the Great Blue Heron gets too close to the dead snake the hawk had been eating. It then flies at and strikes the Great Blue causing the heron to fly a short distance away.
Detalles de la observación
Adult ate the remains of a snake at the edge of the pond. A Great Blue Heron approached slowly and stopped near the hawk. It slowly extended its neck and beak closer and closer to the hawk. The hawk splayed wings to make itself bigger. When this didn’t deter the heron, it flew up and struck the heron causing the heron to squawk and fly a short distance away. After a minute or so, the heron walked away and foraged for his own food. 8:32a: The hawk flew to a telephone pole. iNaturalist observation of snake is available at https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/190122535.
