***Mega; likely continuing bird in the area that was first located by Jim Sweeney on May 8th along the West Island Causeway. We pulled up to Winsegansett with the goal of finding some new shorebird species for our birding big day. So, I (JSE) started scanning the shorebirds that were foraging on the muddy substrate north of Winsegansett Ave. and soon locked in on a small plover in a foraging flock of SEPL that struck me as slightly different. From about 460 feet, the breast band appeared broader and the black markings contrasted much heavier with the pale back. Initially, I was debating if I should try to get a closer look since we were in a rush to get others places, but since Jim had a CRPL less than two miles away the week before, MAE gave me the okay to move in. After moving closer, it was apparent that Common Ringed Plover was the clearest candidate for this fugitive. The bird was generally like a Semipalmated Plover in shape, size (personally don’t recall a size difference, but Dan B. noted it later in the day), color pattern, and behavior. The identification points that support the identification as a CRPL are paler brown back (typical of adult breeding CRPL), petite bill, dark orbital ring, bold white supercilium, and black extending down to the gape. Overall neat, "contrasty" looking bird. The bird remained here for the rest of the day and wasn’t re-sighted thereafter.
